Fedex Corporation

Rated for year 2020: non compliant

Score: -1

Industry:  Freight & Logistics

Fedex is one of world’s biggest delivery services company. Animals heads are accepted to be shipped for taxidermy purposes. In other words, the company accepts to deliver hunting trophies. Although a 2015 campaign through tried to end the transport of hunting trophies, the 2020 Fedex Express terms and conditions still allows this.

As a positive aspect, in 2012 Fedex, as well as UPS and DHL have banned the shipment of live animals to laboratories.

Moreover, livestock cannot be transported to slaughterhouses according to Fedex policy and according to an email exchange we had with a Fedex Charters representative.

As a general rule, live animals including pets are not transported according to Fedex’s policy:

“FedEx Express does not accept live-animal shipments as part of its regular-scheduled service and does not transport household pets such as dogs, cats, birds and hamsters. FedEx Express may accept certain shipments of live animals such as horses, livestock and zoo animals (to and from zoo locations only) on an exception basis if approved and coordinated by the FedEx Animal Desk”

“FedEx Express does not accept animal carcass shipments as part of its regular scheduled service. FedEx Express may accept certain shipments of animal heads and other parts for taxidermy if properly packaged”

Other exceptions exist : “Edible seafood, such as live lobsters,
crabs or other types of fish and shellfish for human consumption, is acceptable”.

In summary, Fedex has made some progress: slaughterhouses and animal testing laboratories cannot be a destination for live animals. However, Fedex still ships hunting trophies and live animals that will be eaten as fishes and lobsters and crabs. If these two points could evolve positively in the future, the company could be classified “Vegan Compliant”. For now, according to the Vegan Finance methodology, Fedex is rated “Vegan non-compliant”.

BENEFICIAL ASPECTS: slaughterhouses and animal testing laboratories not a destination for live animals

HARMFUL ASPECTS: transports hunting trophies; ships live fishes and lobsters and crabs that
